It prolongs the retention time and improves the adhesion of synthetic tears to the cornea and conjunctiva. As a result, the tear film breakdown time is prolonged, and/or the tear film stability is enhanced. A stable tear film protects the cornea from dryness.

It forms a protective layer over a mucous membrane to relieve inflammation or irritation and to preserve the ocular surface microenvironment. Useful in extreme dry eye conditions.
